Historically I’ve claimed to dislike cooking, or to be so bad at it that it was really in the interest of national health that I avoid the kitchen unless I’m making nachos, soup from a package or a big breakfast fry up (without hashbrowns though…let’s not get crazy here.)
Over the last several months, I’ve started becoming more interested in food and cooking my own. It’s been longer, actually, but it’s really been kicked into the next gear by watching Chef Michael Smith’s new show. Basically, it’s a cooking show that tells you some rules, gives you a couple recipes, then shows you were you can easily “freestyle” your own version of the recipe. Dave wrote a blog post about it over on Cowbels if you want to take a look.
A few weeks ago, Dave was hosting the Ace Race, an autumn disc golf tournament and the weather was gross. I was going to be spinning yarn all day at a class, so I wasn’t going to be home, but I decided that it would be a good girlfriend thing to have dinner ready for him when he got home. Enter the crockpot. (Aside: I have yet to screw anything up when I’ve cooked it in the crockpot.)
Pretty much as soon as he left, I went to get beef for pot roast. We had everything else around, so all I needed to do was cut up veggies (carrots and potatoes) and toss them in with the meat, some salt and pepper, dried herbs (marjoram, thyme and oregano, I believe) and some liquid (water and beef flavoured “Better than Bouillon”). I would have browned the meat, but I was in a time crunch since I had about forty minutes to get from Burnaby to White Rock at this point. I did, however, spend two minutes waiting to make sure that I had in fact turned the darned thing on…I don’t know how many people read “Ramona” growing up, but that happened in one of the books, and for once it wasn’t Ramona’s fault. I got the recipe from my “Big Oven” app on my iPhone, but it was pretty easy. I might not even follow a recipe next time! *gasp!!*
It all came out fantastically. Dave was home moments before the timer on the crockpot went off, I was home a little after that, and we had delicious pot roast and/or stew for a couple days after as well.
And last night, I made alfredo sauce from scratch…I’ll post about that another time, I think.
